Sodovik, club of the Russian 2nd division, sees relegation as something almost inevitable after losing 57 points for fielding an ineligible athlete.
The Russian Premiere Football League (RPFL) informed on their website that Sodovik was punished with 3-0 defeats in 23 consecutive matches for playing the Georgian centreback Zviad Dzheladze, who had a dodgy Russian passport. As Sodovik had won 19 of those matches, they losr 57 points.
The club based on the region of the Ural mountains in the city of Sterlitamak, was leading their group with 66 points in 26 matches before the points reduction and was fighting for promotion to the 1sr division. Now the club faces the dangers of an imminent relegation and consequent losing of their professional status.
The club is now 17 points from the pack that is above the relegation zone with only 10 matches to go.
